In contrast to the morning’s drive, the journey to Phil’s parents’ place was through near torrential rain, and yet with the swish of the windscreen wipers peace fell over Chris.

He dashed into the house after parking as close as he could to the front door. The doormats were wet, but he wiped his feet and shook droplets from his hair before following friends to the living room. Phil must have phoned ahead because coffee was already available as well as snacks. Chris accepted coffee and, drawn by the patter of rain on the terrace, he went to drink it by the wide French doors. The pounding rain reduced and a weak sun tried to illuminate the remaining light shower. It reminded Chris of the evening he’d met Owen.

Without much thought, Chris left his empty coffee cup on a nearby table and slipped out of the doors onto the terrace. He was on his way along the treed walkway before he acknowledged that he was going to look for Owen one last time. If Owen were anywhere, he’d be in the smaller living room. Maybe he simply can’t handle crowds.

The fairy lights perpetually lit and twining through the branches, seemed to show him the way to the fork in the path, and this time, when he took the one most familiar, it led to the building lined with windows and culminating in the French doors adorned with silvery lights shooting sparkling spears into the fine rain.

Chris sped up his pace across the grass to the open windows. His heart hammered as he reached the threshold and stopped. Owen lay asleep on the couch, the blue velvet cushion he’d danced with hugged close. At first, Chris hesitated and then he crept toward Owen, just to see his face, just to be near him…

Owen opened his eyes. The blue gaze filled with pleasure. “Chris, I’d given up on seeing you again. This is so great. I dreamed about you. I held your hand and…” He pushed the cushion away and sat up with a delighted smile.

An overwhelming emotion surged through Chris. He dropped to his knees and held Owen’s face. “I’ve been looking for you … looked for you at every event.” He kissed Owen and nothing else mattered. He lost himself in the feel of Owen’s lips on his, and the way Owen murmured soft sounds between kisses. The delicious feeling of belonging filled his heart again.

Owen broke the deluge of kisses from Chris with a smile. He rested his forehead on Chris’s. His words sighed along Chris’s mouth. “I’m so happy to see you.”

Chris snatched another quick kiss before he spoke. “Why haven’t you attended any of the wedding festivities?”

Owen drew a little away to gaze into his eyes. “I didn’t feel well. I’m sorry.”

Concern rose in Chris. “No need to be sorry. I hope you’re feeling better.”

“I am now you’re here. Let’s walk. I’ll show you the maze, and we can talk.”

Chris stood and stepped away.

Owen stood, too. He wore exactly the same clothes as the evening they’d first met. The dress shirt, the necktie fluttering around his collar, and again he was barefoot.

Puzzled but accepting, Chris gave Owen a gentle smile. “It’s raining. You might need your shoes.”

With delight shining from his clear blue gaze, he approached Chris. He held out a hand in greeting, while his other arm dropped to his side and the cushion bounced on his thigh.

“Owen Elmdale. Oh, is it raining? Spring, huh?” He sparkled at Chris, a smile on his handsome face.

Enchanted, Chris took the offered handshake. “Christopher Everhart.”

Owen’s smile turned into an amused grin. “Elmdale and Everhart, sounds like a law firm.”

Chris still held Owen’s hand. He smiled. “Actually, I am—a lawyer that is.” He gazed into the blue eyes locked with his, and read attraction there. Warmth rose through him. For a few seconds a feeling of belonging blanketed him, and then he let go of Owen’s hand, and stood wondering what to do next.

Owen used the freed hand to hover a fingertip on the daisy in Chris’s buttonhole. “Lovely, but wet—so is your jacket.” He trailed the fingertip down Chris’s sleeve.

Chris gave a tiny nod, delight filling him under these ministrations. “It will shake off.”

Owen stepped away. “I’ll get us a drink.” He dropped the blue velvet cushion on the couch as he passed.

Chris ran his hands through his hair surprised to find it wasn’t as wet as he expected.

“I can offer whisky, oh, and there’s vodka, but I have no ice.”

Chris had been correct. A black tie hung untied around Owen’s collar. The ends fluttered on the finely pleated front of Owen’s dress shirt as he faced Chris with this information.

Chris went to him. “Whisky is good.” He watched Owen splash the liquid into two heavy glasses and longed to touch the beautiful man. His skin still glowed from their handshake and he closed his fingers over his palm in an effort to keep the feeling alive.

The stars granted his wish.

Owen turned to him, and in handing Chris the glass of whisky, their fingers trailed on each other’s.

Owen’s eyes locked with Chris’s in a look of recognition and communication.

A tingle sped over Chris. His stomach tightened. I have to get to know him

About Owen. Notes from E. D. Parr

Owen’s waited for Chris many years … someone who can see him, see his world—the world his spirit inhabits. Destiny leads Chris to discover Owen. He’s the one able to free Owen’s spirit and set in motion the life magic that will lead Chris to Matthew. Who is Matthew really?

The similarities in the character Matthew and Owen are sprinkled throughout the last half of this love story purposely because Matthew has an uncanny connection to Owen, in fact for those who believe in soulmates, Owen might well be Matthew. You decide.
